Meet the Taurus

Ariana Lewis, candlemaker and 1/2 of Vessel Candle Co. Also a mom, freelance floral designer, and lover of cats.

What are your sun/moon/rising astrological placements?

I’m a Taurus sun, Libra moon, and Leo rising.

How do you feel your signs have an influence over your work?

Taurus is a very sensual sign, and I feel like this comes out when I work with candles and flowers. I love the tactile nature of creating something with your hands, it’s very grounding. Scent is also so important and personal as each person may have a different scent memory tied to various fragrance notes. I feel that my Leo rising comes into play especially at in-person events, where I have the chance to connect with others about the role scent plays in their lives. My Libra moon appreciates the beauty in all things, which comes to play when we’re thinking of color schemes and designs for Vessel and anytime I’m working with flowers.

Tell us about a favorite scent memory.

The smell of rosemary, thyme, oregano, lavender, mint, and other herbs reminds me of growing up. Our house always had herbs growing outside, and I loved running my hands through the different herbs and smelling them, taking in all that herbal goodness. It’s very calming to me and even now, it is one of my favorite things to do for an instant boost of joy.

What color are you really vibing with lately?

I’m a lover of all things green. Recently, I’ve been admiring all the different color shades of lichen and the chartreuse color of the buds and leaves popping up all over this time of year.

What’s something interesting that you’ve read, watched, or listened to recently?

The last book that I read was Fresh Water for Flowers by Valérie Perrin. It was written beautifully and had many different elements that brought forth a range of emotions. Highly recommend! Make sure you have tissues, and then let’s talk about it together, okay?

Do you have any magical rituals or special ways you like to unwind in your space?

When I do find the time and the energy to unwind, I like to light a palo santo stick or a candle. The scents can be transportive, and I love that slice of peace especially after a long day. Yoga can also bring a calmness to my body and a way to release some of the stored tension, leaving me feeling refreshed. I also like to pick out a favorite crystal or two to hold while I meditate. A fun way to connect and ground to the present moment.

What’s something exciting you’re looking forward to this year?

I’m excited to spend some time by the beach next month with my daughter. I haven’t been on a vacation in who knows how long, so even a couple days away from the hustle and bustle of daily life will feel great. The ocean and salty air always has been a healing and magical space.
